From Surviving to Standing Strong: Gaylord’s Journey

When Judy first met Gaylord, his life was in a very different place. He was navigating uncertainty and trying to find stability in the midst of difficult circumstances. At one point along the journey

to transformation, Gaylord lost his housing and faced the frightening reality of not knowing where he would land next.

But through Love INC, he was not alone.

Judy—a faithful member of Bayshore Baptist Church, one of Love INC’s 21 Church Partners—has been a longtime Love INC Help Center volunteer and Resource Navigator. Her commitment to serving neighbors in need reflects the heart of our mission: mobilizing churches to transform lives and communities In the Name of Christ.

Over time, Judy became one of the consistent voices supporting Gaylord along his journey. Like many stories of transformation, progress didn’t happen overnight. It unfolded step by step through conversations, practical support, and moments of perseverance along the way.

After years of suffering through homelessness and finding housing stability, Gaylord lost his housing again in the fall of 2025.  Because his Love INC family was already by his side, they stepped in to help connect him to the right support and resources. Through the network of churches–and community partners like Bay Area Legal–working together, Gaylord was able to fight for his right to housing and dignity. And after the dust settled on this more recent trial, Gaylord begin rebuilding his life.

Today, Gaylord has a new place to call home.

One moment Judy remembers well involved helping Gaylord move a sofa that had been donated by a neighbor named Hazel. Before the move, she had been warned that the couch was extremely heavy and would require strong help to carry it. But when they arrived and began moving it, the group discovered something surprising—it wasn’t nearly as heavy as expected.

In some ways, that moment became symbolic of Gaylord’s journey. The challenges in front of him had often felt overwhelming, but with the right people walking alongside him, those burdens became lighter and more manageable.

Today, Gaylord is experiencing a much calmer and more stable season of life. With housing secured, he is learning to navigate life more independently and confidently. Recently, he received his first TECO electric bill and successfully set up his Frontier internet service—things that may seem routine for many people but represent meaningful milestones for someone building a new foundation.

According to Judy, what she sees most clearly today is Gaylord becoming the person he once told her he wanted to be.

“He’s becoming a person on his own,” she shared. “He’s starting to become the person he wanted to be when we first started this journey.”

For Judy, the credit belongs to something bigger than any one person.

“I give all the credit to God,” she said.

Gaylord’s story is a reminder that transformation often happens through faithful presence over time. Through volunteers like Judy and partner churches like Bayshore Baptist, Love INC

continuesto demonstrate what happens when the Body of Christ works together—walking alongside neighbors until hope becomes reality.
